A single layer of fine mesh filters precisely but is fragile. Duplex sintered mesh solves that by sintering several layers together — a fine filtration layer backed by coarser support layers — into one rigid plate. Made from 2205 or 2507 duplex stainless, it adds chloride-pitting resistance on top of that structural strength, which is why offshore and desalination systems rely on it. For the general sintered range, see our sintered metal filter page.

How Multi-Layer Sintering Works

The mesh is built from two or more woven layers stacked together: a fine filtration layer that sets the pore rating, and coarser protective and support layers that give it strength. The stack is compressed and sintered under heat so the wires bond at every contact point into a single rigid plate. The result keeps the precision of fine mesh without its fragility.

2205 or 2507: Choosing the Duplex Grade

Both grades are duplex stainless, but they sit at different points on the chloride scale. 2205, at about 35 PREN, covers most chloride duty at lower cost. 2507, the super duplex grade at about 42 PREN, is reserved for full seawater and the most aggressive chloride conditions. The table below sets the boundary.

Where Duplex Sintered Mesh Fits

Seawater and desalination. Chloride-laden feed water and brine would pit 316L mesh; duplex sintered mesh holds its pore rating and resists pitting.

Offshore and subsea equipment. The rigid multi-layer plate withstands pressure and chloride together, suiting subsea filters and screens.

Sour gas and oil filtration. Duplex grades resist the chlorides and stress-corrosion conditions of sour service.

Chloride-containing chemical processes. Any stream carrying chlorides plus mechanical load is a candidate for duplex sintered mesh.

FAQ

What is duplex sintered mesh?

Duplex sintered mesh is a multi-layer sintered wire mesh made from 2205 or 2507 duplex stainless steel, combining precise filtration with high chloride-pitting resistance.

How is multi-layer sintered mesh made?

Fine filtration, protective and support layers are stacked and sintered under heat so the wires bond at every contact point into one rigid plate, keeping fine-mesh precision without the fragility.

Why use duplex instead of 316L sintered mesh?

Duplex alloys have much higher pitting resistance (PREN 35-42 vs ~24 for 316L) and roughly twice the strength, so they last longer in seawater, chloride and sour-service applications.

What is the difference between 2205 and 2507 sintered mesh?

2205 is often selected for many chloride-bearing industrial applications where good corrosion resistance and cost control are both important. 2507 is generally considered when the chloride environment is more aggressive, such as severe seawater, desalination, or high-temperature chloride service. Final selection should be based on actual operating conditions.

What pore sizes are available?

Kawen supplies duplex sintered mesh with pore sizes from 1 to 100 µm, in sheets, discs and cartridges.

Can duplex sintered mesh be cleaned?

Yes. Duplex sintered mesh can be backwashed or ultrasonically cleaned to restore performance.
